Some of you may have never considered or heard of a vacation photographer, but I’m certain we can all relate to the same situation.
You’ve saved up for ages, even worked overtime to go on the vacation of a lifetime. But once there, it’s proven almost impossible to get fantastic vacation shots. Everyone from solo travellers through to couples and families have struggled with this at one time or another. And in order to get a decent happy snap you have to:
- Resort to the selfie stick – no matter if you love them or hate them, selfie sticks do come in handy when trying to get those shots of you, or a decent shot with everyone actually in it.
- Find someone with the same level of camera as you so they are less likely to run off with your camera. Admit it – you’ve done it!
- Find someone with a expensive camera with the hopes that they can put together a decent shot. Most of the time they don’t. But you don’t want to ask them to take it again, so you put up with the crappy photo. Or wait awkwardly for them to leave the area so you can ask someone else – and the whole process starts again!
It can be hard to capture those beautiful vacation moments by yourself. So that’s why we looked into the growing trend of getting a vacation photographer.

We hooked up with WanderZoom in Colombia Sri Lanka, a fascinating and vibrant place that certainly offered a interesting backdrop for our photography shoot.
We had no idea what to expect but the WanderZoom team were really great with their communication and making sure we were in the right place at the right time to meet our photographer Oshadhi. Another interesting fact about Oshadhi was that he is hearing impaired – we were so happy to learn that WanderZoom was hiring people based on their abilities as a photographer and not judging whatever other abilities they might or might not have. We were told well in advance and were more than happy to work with this talented photographer.
Oshadi and his assistant were super friendly and funny and we had no troubles hanging out with them for the duration of our photo shoot. Oshadhi was professional and very relaxed – which made us relax – which meant we got some great candid shots.
I also decided to go be a girly girl and get my hair and makeup done professionally. I highly recommend this ladies! If you are like me and can barely put on mascara without poking yourself in the eye, this is a great idea. Tommo also needed some sprucing up so we headed to Mosh Salon. These guys do professional hair and make up for celebrities, brides all the way down to little old me – and I looked and felt great. Mosh is modern, funky and really took great care of us!

5 Reasons Should you get a Vacation Photographer for your Next Holiday
1. Access to a full professional vacation photographer kit.
Most people travelling are using their phones to take pictures. Some might have a proper camera, but you won’t be travelling with the full set up. Various lenses for different types of shots. Fancy external flashes that light you up in just the right way to make you look stunning. Light modifiers and lots of other fancy stuff that you certainly cannot fit into your luggage!
2. Insider knowledge
The photographers are all from the location, so they know some of the best places in town to get the perfect shot for you. Not all people want the same style shot, you have the opportunity to get insider knowledge to the area and discover some location that you never knew existed.

There were a few times during our shoot that we wanted to use certain things as props, or include people in our shots. The vacation photographer can ask the people in their own language, and that’s how you end up with some unique shots you would never have got on your own.

The key to a great photo is usually in the post editing. You don’t have to worry about anything, but just turning up. They take you around, take your shots, edit them up, and in around 7 days you’ll get a nice little email with all of the best photos. Easy!

This is just a small sample of the pics we received. The shots far exceeded our expectations – and we both agree that getting a vacation photographer was absolutely worth it. We NEVER have decent shots of the two of us, and now we have a lasting memory of our time in Colombo.
We would totally hire a vacation photographer again. It’s a great idea, especially for those going away on honeymoon. A vacation photographer is 100% worth it to capture the most special vacation you will ever take, and have stunning images to look back on for many years to come.
