Yee Shin Guest House Hsipaw, Myanmar. (Review, Video, Contact)

Yee Shin Guest house Hsipaw: OutsideThe latest addition to the Hsipaw guesthouse market is Yee Shin Guest house, right in the centre of town. Yee Shin is a mini Chinese business empire in Hsipaw, next door to the guesthouse is a large hardware store, they also have a bus company!

The guesthouse itself told us they “Sometimes” accept foreigners. Burma is an interesting country in this respect, there are rules but if those rules get in the way of making money then often they are ignored. Their official licensing status is unclear but as the best value guesthouse in Hsipaw (in May 2013) we figured, what the hell.

The best thing you notice straight away is of course that everything is very new. They opened in late 2012, the budget rooms are basic but clean and without the broken fixtures and damage that you see with older guesthouse which don’t consider maintenance important.

$13 a night got us:

Yee Shin Guest house Hsipaw: The shared shower is separate from the toilet and surprisingly clean.

The shared shower is separate from the toilet and surprisingly clean.

Large, new and comfortable Double Bed

Ceiling Fan

Mosquito netting in Windows

Shared Bathroom and western toilet which were very clean and new, the hot water worked and they are next to the upstairs rooms (you don’t have to go outside or downstairs like in some places)

Very friendly/helpful staff with good English

Multiple country electrical sockets.

No Breakfast

No Air Con (not really needed in this part of Burma)

Small but adequate room

No Wifi

The room is a little noisy right in town, not too bad with window closed and ear plugs in.

Yee Shin Guest house Hsipaw: Double roomThe hotel wasn’t busy and is not well featured in guide books as yet, so expect the prices to rise in the 2014 season.

Mr Charles Guesthouse

The original Hsipaw guesthouse for Foreigners, it got a bit of a bad rap because it had a monopoly and tourists felt they were getting ripped off… Maybe they were, but these days it doesn’t seem to dissimilar from anywhere else in Myanmar.

Budget Dbl Ensuite ($20), bit dingy.

Standard Dbl Ensuite ($28) much nicer with Air Con and Fan

Superior Double Ensuite ($32) with balcony and Bathtub, Air Con, Fan.

Breakfast & Wifi is included for all guests.

105 Auba Street, Hsipaw. (Keep heading North past Mr Food and Yee Shin, about 5 minutes walk and you’ll see a sign)

Lily Guesthouse

Lily guesthouse HsipawThe supposedly friendlier option to Mr Charles (according to the internet!) we didn’t see any evidence that it was any different, they are sort of on a par for price and quality. Nice place and the wifi worked ok (500 kyat for non-guests, though they asked 1000kyat at first until we laughed at them!)

Small Double with Fan ($20) share bathroom, but clean.

Double ensuite ($25), good size, clean, Air Con.

Large Twin ($30) with large bathroom too. Clean, air con.

Breakfast & Wifi is included for all guests.

134 Bogyoke road (Heading North, turn right just after Mr Food, about 3 minutes walk along that road)

Diamond Guesthouse

This is your bargain basement option. Very small rooms, a bit dirty, share bathrooms which is the classic trough of water instead of a shower, and squat toilets. If you are looking to save money however, this is a very cheap option in Hsipaw.

5000 kyat ($5.50) per person, double, twin and single rooms available.

Just off the main north road. Walk past Mr Food and take the second right towards the market, its just there near the corner on your right, not super obvious, the sign is up high, but reception is downstairs.

Mr Kid Guesthouse

We couldn’t find this guesthouse! We later discovered it is near the rail station. Plenty of positive reviews online, no idea on current prices although wikitravel reckons from 5000kyat, its possible but probably an out of date price.

UPDATE FEB 2014: Agnes contacted us to say prices per person are starting from only 4000kyat. Single and double rooms. Hot water, friendly staff. This would make this the cheapest guesthouse in Hsipaw.
