Fun Things To Do In Brisbane At Night. Kayaking Brisbane Plus More

“I just need summer nights and fun!”

There are plenty of activities to keep you entertained during the day in Brisbane. It’s an active city with loads to see and do. But what about when the sun goes down, the city lights come on, and Brisbane becomes Brisvegas? What is there to do then?

We’ve written a few articles about the craft beer scene etc in Brisbane but booze and food aside – there are a few great activities still to be enjoyed under the pale moonlight.

Fun Things To Do In Brisbane At Night – Kayaking Brisbane River

Riverlife has fast become a popular adventure company in the Brisbane area, offering abseiling at Kangaroo Point, stand up paddle boarding, rock climbing, scooters and bike tours and our personal favourites Segway tours! We also discovered that on a Saturday night’s they have a special night time paddle and BBQ.

Who could resist kayaking Brisbane’s famous river at night – and finishing it off with an all Australian BBQ? Ok I know I said before “food and booze aside” but come on, as if we were going to do a tour that didn’t involve food at all – that’s just crazy talk!

This kayaking Brisbane river trip is a leisurely 90 minute experience in fully illuminated kayaks. You’ll be given all of the necessary safety equipment by the guides and there are also lockers to keep your valuables in. You will get wet in some way – so wear clothes you don’t mind getting a bit wet. Especially if you make a wrong manoeuvre and end up taking an unexpected swim in the river. It Can Happen!!!

Seeing Brisbane city light up as you make your way along the river is really quite breathtaking. As it’s a Saturday night you’ll also hear music thumping from the bars along the waterfront and party boats passing by, giving you a soundtrack to your kayaking Brisbane river experience. But all in all I found it very relaxing.

Firstly the group heads towards the famous Storey Bridge. On this night it was illuminated in Red, White and Blue. It varies depending on what is going on in current events. Typically each lighting display on the bridge is to commemorate a special day in history, raise awareness for charities and showcase upcoming events etc. You can actually find out all about scheduled light up’s around Brisbane City here: https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/laws-permits/laws-permits-businesses/light-brisbane-hang-bridge-banner/light-council-asset

Tommo and I found it pretty exciting kayaking under the Storey Bridge as we had previously been on top of it, across it – and now we were going under it! It was also really helpful that the tide was taking us the direction we wanted to go, which made things much easier for everyone, even the less experienced kayakers in the group. You hardly had to work hard at all – the tide made it nice and easy. And then as the tide changed we just all floated back the way we came, all the way back to the Riverlife home base.

And just like that 90 minutes was over – and we realised we were all starving!!! Thankfully the guys at Riverlife knew this would happen (not their first rodeo) and had beers, wine and soft drinks chilled and waiting to be consumed and our BBQ meal ready to go. I can tell you most people would pay a fortune to have dinner with the views of Brisbane city that we had, but it was all included in the Riverlife night time kayaking package.

Great night, Great Experience, Great time had by all!

Fun Things To Do In Brisbane At Night – Relax and Enjoy the View

If you’ve had a massive day walking all over Brisbane and kayaking Brisbane river is a little to much for your poor tied body to handle, we have something for you that you’ll love. Horizontal-ing! Ok this is my own made up word. But think about it – what could be better than horizontal-ing on a comfy bed BUT with an epic view of Brisbane’s Southbank and Brisbane River to keep you entertained all night long?

This might sound like some weird bar you go – but no it’s actually a hotel we discovered that has some of the BEST views we’ve seen in Brisbane. And we lived in Brisbane for years – we know!

Tommo demonstrating how horizontal-ing is done. He’s such a pro!

Ibis Styles Elizabeth street is a new addition to the hotel scene in Brisvegas – but it quickly became a favourite rest spot of ours because of the few factors.

Location: staying at Ibis styles Elisabeth st you have easy access to the city and also Southbank. Walking distance easy. Also if you want to go anywhere else it’s close to public transport including buses and ferries. It’s the perfect place to position yourself for your stay in Brisbane

Design: Clean, modern, comfortable and affordable. Just what you want in a big city like Brisbane

The VIEW: OMG the view! I don’t think I have ever stayed anywhere in Brisbane that has these epic views. And the sunsets were simply magical – it’s just the perfect spot to experience the best of Brisbane.

Tina Towel Swan thinks the views are pretty epic too!

It also just happens to be walking distance to one of my fav foodie spots The Bagel Boys on Adelaide street – ohhh these guys will make you a bagel so good you will just keep going back for more….like we did…everyday we were in town. #IRegretNothing

Fun Things To Do In Brisbane At Night – Take a Brisbane River Cruise – for FREE!

Brisvegas is a big city, in fact it’s the capital city of Queensland, and therefore has some pretty stunning city lights to go with it. A great way (and one of our personal favourite ways) to see the shimmering city lights is by cruising down the Brisbane river, enjoying the evening breeze and taking in the sights by ferry.

The ferry is called the City Hopper and runs every 30 minutes between 6am and midnight, seven days a week. The CityHopper travels along the Brisbane River, stopping at North Quay, South Bank 3, Maritime Museum, Thornton Street, Eagle Street Pier, Holman Street, Dockside and Sydney Street terminals. Think of it as a hop-on hop-off bus, but it’s a ferry – and it’s completely free.

There is an upstairs observation deck that you can sit on and get some great photos of the city and the Storey Bridge – but it can get quite full at times so try and avoid riding the ferry at peak hours.

Fun Things To Do In Brisbane At Night – Climb the Storey Bridge

Ok we mentioned before about kayaking Brisbane river under the Storey Bridge, but another fun thing to do in Brisbane at night (well twilight) is climb to the top of the Storey Bridge.

I surprised Tommo with a twilight climb a few years back for Tommo’s 30th Birthday, and it’s a really great adventure to add to your Brisbane bucket list.

Fun Things To Do In Brisbane At Night - Storey Bridge Climb

Here’s a fun fact – did you know that there are only 3 bridge climbs in the world!

And if you really want to take the adventure to the next level – you can go abseiling as well! I wish I could say it’s off the top of the bridge – how cool would that be – but it’s at Anchor Pier into Captain Burke Park – about 30 metres below. Still very cool experience though!

Interestingly enough, the thing Tommo and I really enjoyed about the climb, was the information about the city the guide gave us along the way. We had lived in Brisbane for years and there were many things about the city that we had no idea about. We walked away from this experience feeling like we learnt something new – and we really like that in a tour!
