Visiting Indonesia: A Travel Guide to Indonesia’s Best Islands

A Food Fun Travel Guest Post

The beautiful Indonesian archipelago consists of more than 17,000 islands that are waiting to be visited. Indonesia is located in Southeast Asia and has been drawing travelers from around the world to visit the destination for decades.

When planning your trip to Indonesia, it’s important to consider certain factors like the type of itinerary, the time of the year to visit the country, the activities you want to experience, and which places to see.

In this guide, we’ll focus on exploring the best islands you should add to your itinerary for an ultimate, joyous experience. Whether it’s the Banda Islands or the beautiful city of Bali, Indonesia has a lot to offer. So, let’s check them out!

Bali

Bali is undoubtedly the main tourist attraction in Indonesia. The whole island seems like a paradise on Earth, and for sure, you’ve seen hundreds of pictures of it in magazines or on Instagram. You can visit Bali via a cruise or book some of the Indonesia tours that will take you on an unforgettable journey throughout the most remote corners of the island.

Banyu Wana Amertha Falls is a beautiful waterfall in Bali and one of the hidden gems untouched by humans. Very few people have heard of this waterfall, with its magical waters that cascade down a boulder, making it a perfect view at sunrise.

Bali is rich in waterfalls, so you shouldn’t be surprised if the locals advise you to visit another one known as Nung Nung. It’s located 75 minutes from Ubud and is one of the least visited ones. Visitors must step down toward the bottom to reach the waterfall.

Java

Java is one of the best islands to visit for two reasons – due to the beauty of the place and the way you can explore it. The scenic views, surrounded by cliffs and an emerald-green river, along with the volcanic nature of the island, make it worth visiting.

One of the more adreneline fuel ways you can explore Java is by body-rafting. It’s a rafting activity, but without the raft part! You can jump in the water, slide from the waterfalls, climb the cliffs, and float in the river.

The Green Canyon is the main touristic attraction in Java and the cheapest way to reach it is via a train to Banjar station, then taking the bus to Cijulang.

Additional tips to consider when visiting Java and the Green Canyon:

  • The cost may vary depending on the season you’re visiting in
  • It’s recommended that you visit Java during the dry season since it tends to be warmer
  • You will need a guide for most of the activities there, so we’d advise you to book a guide

Another place you can visit on Java is Bandung. It’s the third-largest city, known for its cool climate, volcanic mountains, and beautiful sceneries. Bandung was a famous destination for the wealthy at the time of the Dutch colonial days. Thus you can feel the Dutch presence in the heritage architecture and their lifestyle.

Lombok

Lombok is another Indonesian island that must be on your bucket list. Moreover, if you are looking for a place where you can relax and spend your afternoons on the turquoise beaches, with a cocktail in your hand.

Lombok is the home of a mixture of cultures – you’ll find different cultures of Buddhism, Islam, and Hinduism that live harmoniously on the island. Also, many festivals take place on the island, Bau Nyale being the most famous one.

Lombok is an island rich in wildlife, beautiful sceneries, and untouched beauty. It’s the perfect romantic getaway for couples.

Sumatra

Your trip to Sumatra will be filled with many opportunities to learn about the Indigenous people and their culture, explore the wildlife and enjoy the serene beaches. Most tourists travel to North Sumatra, then take a jungle trekking trip in Bukit Lawang.

The main attractions to visit in Sumatra are Lake Toba, Palau Samosir, the National Parks, and take a hiking tour across the area. Sumatra is best explored via a boat tour, so make sure you book the right itinerary when planning your trip.

Lake Toba is the largest volcanic lake where you can swim and enjoy a different type of swimming experience. Samosir Island should also be on your list because you can learn more about the Batak culture and their lifestyle on the island.

Sumatra’s National parks offer many opportunities to experience the smell of a rainforest, the sights, and sounds of the island life, and watch the endangered species, including the incredible orangutans.
