The Best Attraction (You didn’t know about) in Siem Reap, Cambodia?

Circus3The Must See Attraction in Siem Reap (other than that famous temple complex…what was it called again?) is not what you might expect. Amazingly, on trip advisor this is the first “non-temple” on the list of best attractions and even beats Angkor Wat in the ratings!

Come One Come All to Phare – The Cambodia Circus!!!

Phare is an Arts program based in Battambang offering disadvantaged children who have come from poor families, orphanages or have been the victims of human trafficking, another chance at having a bright future!

Phare Ponleu Selpak (Association), which translates into “Brightness of the Arts” in English, is an organisation and school that found its origins directly from inside a refugee camp during the reign of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge.

In site 2 refugee camp the children were encouraged to draw as a means of dealing with the trauma of war. After leaving the camp, nine of the students decided to continue this work. Today the school has over 900 students and has branched out into all aspects of the arts including animation, theatre, music and acrobatics.

Phare – The Cambodia Circus – is a product from this incredible performing arts school that has nightly shows in Siem Reap and also tours locally and internationally. By having a night out at the Big Top you not only get to enjoy incredible entertainment but also get to help out a worthy cause as proceeds go towards further training, better equipment and most of all helping these talented children have a better, brighter future.

Details

Currently there are 18 different productions, it just depends which one is on when you are in town. The show we saw was called “Chills” and is an exploration of human fear through acrobatics and music. The artists involved are young up and comers, some of the stunts are genuinely international standard but on a low budget – so don’t go in expecting pyrotechnics!

For $15 you will be thoroughly entertained, the kids give a truly energetic performance!
