Introduction to What To Do In Corfu: Brief History Of The Island

The Island of Corfu has a long history and is mentioned frequently in Greek Mythology. The name Corfu might be derived from the word koryphi, meaning peak and could go back to the 7th century when the Byzantine empire built a castle on a summit near Corfu Town. But, to the Greeks, the island is known as Kerkyra, named after a nymph who was the daughter of the river god Apsopos.

The island has archeological evidence of inhabitation as far back as 40,000 BC. More modern evidence of human settlement from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods (before 2,600 BC) have been found in the north of the island near Sidári.

Corfu’s location in the Ionian sea (North West Greece) has led to it being invaded and occupied many times over the years. From the Roman & Byzantine empires to coming under Venetian rule in 1386 until being ceded to the French in 1797. This long connection with Venice left its legacy on the cuisine of the island, which strongly integrates Italian cooking methods and foods, like pasta.

Shortly after French rule began, the island became British following the Napoleonic wars of the early 19th Century. Eventually, in 1864, Corfu was returned to Greece. During World War 2 the islands were occupied by Italy and then Germany until eventually being liberated by allied forces.

After the war, many historic buildings had survived and the islands slowly became a tourist favourite from the 1960s onwards.

The perfect summer climate, with many days of sunshine, combined with wet weather in the winter, keep Corfu as one of the greenest islands in Greece, where visitors can also enjoy the crystal blue waters of the Ionian sea.

Indoor Dining In The Farmhouse

Perched on a flat space atop a hill about 20 minutes drive west of Corfu, Ambelonas is more than just a restaurant and vineyard with panoramic views. Owner Vasiliki Karounou returned to Greece, after living the in the USA, and eventually took responsibility for the family vineyard that had fallen into disrepair.

The move was prompted when a forest fire destroyed the massively overgrown, untended land around the vineyard. Though the fire caused major damage to the buildings, it also cleared land and undergrowth, which would have taken months to clear by hand. This was the push that was needed to revitalize the site.

The buildings were restored and now the vineyard, as well as making wine, operates as a restaurant and cooking class focusing on local, traditional Corfiot dishes (The dishes of Corfu).

What To Do In Corfu: Ambelonas Cooking Class With Chef/Author Vasiliki Karaounou

When Vasaliki moved to Corfu, she realised that something else was also missing from the Island – The traditional Cuisine. The tourism boom which started in the 1960’s led to the internationalisation of the local diet, especially in restaurants. The locals had become used to eating the same food that tourists were familiar with and had turned away from many traditional dishes.

In the early 2000’s Vasiliki began her mission to discover the traditional recipes of Corfu. She searched for local plants and herbs that were endemic to the island. She tested old methods as well as incorporating new methods into using the local produce and creating new dishes that are, at their heart, Corfiot.

This culminated in transforming a small artisan food business into a locally run vineyard, restaurant and cooking class at Ambelonas. It also led to the release of a cookbook, with over 50 new and traditional recipes. Some of which we got to create when we visited for a Corfu cooking class.

Making Traditional Corfu Style Zucchini Pie

Our class took place outdoors, under the tree arches in the main courtyard. It’s a casual, family style class where you have the option to participate as a cook, or just watch. As well as the Zucchini pie pictured above, we also made Sofrito – a slow cooked meat dish (typically beef) made with white wine and a lot of garlic. Though the word sofrito is used in many cuisines, the Corfu version is unique and is quite different from sofritos made with onions/carrots/celery etc. In fact, parsley and garlic are the only veggies going into this meaty Corfiot dish.

In total, we prepared 6 dishes to be eaten over 5 courses. We also got to sample local meats, cheeses, and homemade chutneys. It was quite a feast.

But, if you just want to eat, not cook, the Ambelonas restaurant is also rated one of the best restaurants in Corfu on tripadvisor.

What To Do In Corfu: Traditional Corfu Lunch @ Bioporos Organic Farm, Restaurant & Cooking Class

Bioporos is a 100% certified organic farm – Even down to the animal feed. It’s also a family run business and has over 70 acres of land and olive groves on the peaceful banks of Lake Korission, in south Corfu. Before we got cooking and eating, we took a walk through the grounds on a damp Tuesday afternoon. At the lake, we saw a large group of Flamingos. We also learnt about a local herb called almiriki, which grows near salt water and actually tastes like salt and pepper.

The restaurant and cooking class focus on the use of organic ingredients, many of which are grown right there at Bioporos, and local Corfiot recipes.

As part of our lunch feast we enjoyed a salad made from fresh oranges, lavender, olives, and chili oil. This is considered a traditional farmers snack that could be made in just a couple of minutes. We also filled up on a hearty Pastissada, a Venetian influenced local dish made with meat (chicken or beef) slow cooked in old wine. The idea is that the leftover wine from the last season that has started to vinegarize a little, is used up in this sweet and sour meat dish, served with pasta. Today, fresh wine with vinegar added may often be used instead.

More info on the story of Pastissada and other local Corfiot dishes is coming in our What To Eat In Corfu podcast & article (Late 2018)

The Governor – Olive Oil Tasting & Class

Premium Olive Oil By The Governor

What To Do In Corfu / Things To Do In Corfu Greece / Corfu Greece Map: Olive Oil Tasting @ The Governor

Learning About How To Make Olive Oil

The sad fact that many locals admitted to us in Corfu, is that the locally produced olive oil is just not up to the standard produced on islands like Crete. Sadly, the vast majority of olives produced are done so in bulk to send abroad to Italy so they can be bottled there and stamped with an Italian label, to sell at a higher price than the quality deserves.

At The Governor Olive Oil Farm, they set out with a mission to reverse this trend and to produce high quality olive oil that Corfu could be proud of. And, when you ask a local about The Governor their eyes light up. Everyone knows who they are and how they are transforming the reputation of Corfu Olive Oil.

The problem is that to produce the best olive oil, with the finest flavor and highest level of nutrition, you need to harvest the olives before they fall from the tree. The easy collection method in Corfu, is to hang nets below the trees and wait for the olives to fall, they then take olives from the nets every few days, then process them. But by the time these olives are processed, they are already passed their best. Just like an apple that has sat on the ground for days before being eaten.

The Governor, owned by the Dafnis family, put in the effort to harvest straight from the branch and process immediately while the olives are at their freshest.

At The Governor you’ll learn about traditional productions methods, as well as how they blend traditional practice with the more efficient modern processes. Also, you’ll learn the proven health science behind why olives oils are not born equal and how using low quality olive oil may not be having the positive effects on your health that you think… Plus, you get to taste the difference of the premium olive oil for yourself.

Pasta Corfu – Pasta Shop

Pasta Corfu Shop makes traditional Italian pasta with a Greek twist

Pasta has been an integral part of Corfu Cuisine, at least since the Venetians ran the island. Pasta Corfu is a handmade pasta shop right in Corfu Town where Italian pasta making meets local ingredients and fillings. From green tagliatelle, made from Corfu seaweed, to cappelletti stuffed with the local chicken pastissada (my personal favorite).

Pasta Corfu has fused together two culinary traditions to produce unique pasta you won’t find outside of Corfu. As Corfu was an island where spices stopped off on their way back from the east, destined for Venice, you’ll also find pasta infused with turmeric and other interesting varieties. Also, local flavours like squid ink, and a ravioli stuffed with Fish Bianco – a popular garlicky cooked fish.

Brewmaster Claudio next to Corfu Beer’s fermentation tanks

The Corfu Beer company pioneered the real ale & craft beer movement in Corfu. Brewmaster Claudio explained to us that “Turning locals on to international style ales when the local beer in Corfu had consisted only of basic, light lagers for so long, was quite a challenge”. But after returning from visits to northern parts of Europe like the UK and Czeczia, Claudio and his business partner, Spiros, were convinced that Corfu needed a better selection of beer – especially given the large amount of international tourism the island receives.

The Corfu Beer Brewery focuses on pure ingredients, with no additives. Since their foundation, and along with there flagship red ale in 2009, the Brewery has grown rapidly with year round production, careful refrigeration of the product after bottling to maintain quality, and the introduction of many new varieties as well as seasonal offerings. This includes a smooth IPA as well as a Pilsner that I would describe as a malty masterpiece.

Since 2013 they have been running a beer festival with guest beers from around Europe – each year focuses on different regions. The festival runs for 5 days in Late September and sees more than 20,000 visitors making the pilgrimage to North Corfu. They even offer bus transfers direct from Corfu Town.

What To Do In Corfu: Visit The Wine Cellar @ Theotoky Estate

The Theotoky family hail from Constantinople (Istanbul) and they fled to Corfu in the late 15th Century when Istanbul fell to the Ottomans. They bought large quantities of land and have been an important family on the island ever since. The family was a part of the nobility under Venetian rule at the time, but lost the title once Corfu returned to be part of Greece.

Georges Theotoky, a direct descendent, still owns the Vineyard today.

The cellar door is open for wine tasting (by appointment) from Tuesday to Sunday.

What To Do In Corfu: Taste Natural Wines @ Nicoluzo Estate

At Nicoluzo estate they focus on Corfu wine made from grapes which are native to Corfu. In fact they’ve been searching for lost vines around the island. Ancient grape varietals that now only exist in rare amounts in the wild and are not yet cultivated.

The small production of 15,000 litres per year is focused on unique wines highlighting the historic pedigree of the native grapes and the micro climate of the Ano Korakiana region in central Corfu. Come here to try Corfu Wine varietals you’ll likely never have tasted before and which currently are only being produced at Nicoluzo estate, such as:

  • Pavlo-Cacotrigi (white)
  • Xeropodia (white)
  • Korakianitiko (white)
  • Gkouzianiti (White)
  • Skopelitico (Red)

Bare in mind that these varieties are so rare that availability is very limited. Do contact the vineyard in advance to check what is available for tasting and purchase. Nicoluzo Estate also has some slightly more common Greek grapes such as:

  • Petrokoritho (Red)
  • Tsoupi (Red & White varieties)
  • Afioni (A Corfu Red Grape)
  • Mantzavi (Corfu Red)
  • Katsakoulias (Red)

Drink Corfu Kumquat Spirits & Liqueurs @ Lazaris

The Kumquat was brought to Corfu for cultivation from China in 1924. It thrived in the Corfu climate.

The Lazaris distillery started in 2005 with a simple mission to produce a high quality kumquat spirit that would give tourists a lasting memory of the flavors of Corfu. Today the distillery has grown to also offer limoncello, ouzo, tsipouro and more. Mikal, their head confectioner also invented a cacao and kumquat nougat that is divine and not overly sweet.

The kumquat spirit is made by putting 3 holes in each kumquat and soaking them in pure alcohol for 20 days. After that, the alcohol is diluted with a sugar solution to bring the beverage to a comfortable 30% alcohol. An alternative version is made by mixing the spirit with cream to make a delicate cream liqueur. The limoncello was perhaps the most surprising to us as we never knew it was made with the lemon peel, rather than the lemon juice. You learn something new every day….

Visiting Lazaris is easy – you can turn up anytime during opening hours.

Best Restaurants In Corfu (Inc. Corfu Town Restaurants)

Eating well is inevitable in Corfu. The Mediterranean diet is alive and well and in Corfu you’ll find fresh ingredients combined to make everything from traditional Greek dishes like Moussaka, to Corfu traditional food like Pastissada and Sofrito. Still, some restaurants are better than others, of course, and below is a list of highlights from our many trips to Corfu over the last few years.

Pastissada stuffed Ravioli @ Pomo D’oro

Pomo D’oro restaurant sits in a leafy side street, just off one of the main tourist streets. Close enough to be very convenient, and just far enough away to feel calm, intimate and authentic. Lights hang from the trees, along with old saganaki pans (Greek frying pans) in the courtyard, raised above the quiet side street.

Chef Aristotelis Mengoulas has designs seasonal menus to highlight the freshest local ingredients, year round. The Corfu summer salad (pictured) brings together Nouboulo (Corfiot Cured Pork Loin) with naturally sweet melon balls, figs, walnuts, and a local gruyere style cheese. The confit pork is also a star, pork loin softer than I thought was possible, served with dreamy carrot puree and crispy shredded nouboulo (like premium bacon bits).

The locally farmed sea bream comes topped with taramasalata for a salty kick, that is balanced perfectly with a melon-lemon jus.

As well as classic Greek cooking, Mengoulas brings 14 years of experience working in Bologna, Italy, to the table. This can be seen in dishes like the Pastissada stuffed ravioli (pictured), as well as the Spirulina Ravioli (Dark green from it’s blending with seaweed) stuffed with cuttlefish.

What To Do In Corfu: Eat Saganaki Cheese With Faux Honeycomb

Chef Mengoulas visits the producers in person to test for quality before purchasing, and it shows. Especially in the Saganaki fried Graviera cheese with September honey & faux honeycomb. The cheese melts to the perfect texture for Saganaki cheese – one of the best we’ve had, and we’ve had it all over Greece! The honey is a rich deep brown because it is only produced when the bees suck the resin from the trees when flowering plants are at a minimum. Sensational!

There are a lot of Corfu Town Restaurants, but the variety and creativity, plus the use of the best possible local ingredients make Pomo D’oro a must for a casual fine dining night out.

Take a walk around the waterfront road, just outside Corfu old town, and you’ll find a steep roadway, heading through an arch down to the harbour front of Faliraki. Boats don’t seem to pull up here, but people do because En Plo is right on the quay and you can literally jump in for a swim from your table. The water is clear blue and you can watch the fish swimming around while sipping on a local Corfu beer.

The food is traditional greek with plenty of seafood options. It may not be the absolute best in Corfu but it’s still great and the location can’t help but impress for an afternoon or three.

Bellissimo has a special place in both our hearts and our stomachs. Megsy and I spent our second date here in 2010 (we used to work on cruise ships, so we had our first few dates in locations across Europe). We ordered Moussaka – it was awesome! We returned again in 2016 and the Moussaka was just as good.

The star of the show, however, has to be their Mussels Saganaki – Mussels pan fried in tomato and feta cheese. Expect traditional Greek taverna style food with mostly tourists, but in a smaller square away from the busy tourist street.

But the island will not be the only thing to catch your eye, great plating and an exciting menu will get you salivating. The squid on a bed of taramasalata topped with cous-cous brought together soft but crispy squid with the salty-sea-world of the taramasalata. One of my favourite dishes in Corfu.

Awesome Meze Selection @ Paréa

Paréa By The Sea sits on the private marina at Kontokali bay resort. They specialize in contemporary Greek meze dishes (the greek equivalent of tapas). This means you get to order a little bit of everything. Isn’t that what every foodie wants?

So let’s talk about the Corfiot bitter orange salad with fig and local formaela cheese (pictured centre). This dish instantly became one of my favourite dishes in Corfu. Believe it or not, a dish that is about 50% cheese can still be classed as a “salad”. It must be a Greek thing as Greece also have a traditional dish called “spicy cheese salad” which is simply feta, yoghurt, and chili with olive oil. It’s amazing by the way, as is this bitter orange salad.

Also, a must try, the grilled octopus with molasses and rock samphire. Plus, the fried gruyere in phyllo with a fried egg – those decadent little salt bombs leave you wanting more!

If you take a drive towards the mountains of North West Corfu you might just stumble upon Taverna Elizabeth. A classic countryside taverna that opened in 1960, right by the main road in Doukades. Main roads in this part of the world barely have space for 2 cars to pass each other. So traffic will not be causing a major disturbance to your meal.

Grandmother Elizabeth opened the restaurant and now her granddaughter runs the taverna, staying faithful to Elizabeth’s original, traditional recipes. As well as Corfu traditional food like Pastissada and Sofrito, the real stand out dish for us was the Rabbit Stifado. Though not originally from Corfu, this Greek stew was dark and rich with sensational flavor. Make sure to also try the homemade wine.

What To Do In Corfu: Scenic Drives

As you wind up steep mountain roads and hairpin turns you’ll discover ever changing panoramic views on either side. From the mountains, past cute little towns and down to the sea in every direction. Both driving routes from Doukades to Argos or Agios Mattheos to Kamara take you through cute traditional villages as well. I don’t think my photo above really does the view justice, you’ll have to visit for yourself.

The easiest way to take these drives and be able to stop to take photos is to rent a car.

What To Do In Corfu: Kalami Viewpoint Of Albania

What To Do In Corfu: Visit the Kalami Viewpoint for closer views of Albania across the narrowest part of the straight

On the way to the North East corner of Corfu, following the coast road from Corfu Town, you’ll find the observation viewpoint just after the town of Kalami. At this point, you are approaching the narrowest stretch of water that separates Corfu and Albania. You can even see Albania’s premiere beach town, Sarandë, in the distance.

On google maps it’s marked in German for some reason. I’ve marked it in English on our Free Corfu Greece Map For Tourists.

Bataria Beach – Kensington On Sea

What To Do In Corfu: Visit Bataria Beach on The North Coast

Local expats joke that the area around Kassiopi, on the North coast of Corfu is called “Kensington-on-sea” in reference to the rich London district of Kensington, because of the number of rich people from the UK who have second homes there or have retired there. And who wouldn’t want to retire somewhere this gorgeous?

For vacationers, Kassiopi town has a quaint harbor with some casually sophisticated restaurants to choose from. A short walk around the cliffs takes you to Bataria Beach. A popular spot but also one of my favorite little beaches on Corfu.

What To Do In Corfu: Liapades Beach

What To Do In Corfu: Visit The Small Liapades Beach On The West Coast

On The west coast of Corfu you’ll find Liapades beach. Although there are now very few beaches around Corfu which are both easy to access but also undiscovered, Liapades beach is at least a pretty laid back option, especially outside of peak season.

Things To Do In Corfu Greece: Canal d’Amour Beach

Canal D’Amour (Canal of love) is a rocky inlet to the North West of Corfu. Stunning rock formations combined with Corfu’s ever present crystal water make this a perfect photogenic spot. Some people also choose to dive off the cliffs – at your own risk.

More Things To Do In Corfu Town

The Esplanade (Spianada) – The large green park/square that sits between the edge of Corfu old town and the old fortress on the coast, is called the Esplanade. On the east side of the Esplanade, a long row of French style buildings, built during the brief French occupation in the early 19th century. Take a walk in the park, or grab a seat in one of the many cafes to enjoy and afternoon of people watching.

The Royal Palace: Museum of Asian Art – Corfu Town’s former Royal Palace sits at the north end of the Esplanade. It was built in 1816 by the British but abandoned in 1864 when the British returned Corfu to Greece. It now, unexpectedly, houses a fantastic collection of art from China, Japan, India and other parts of Asia.

Open Air Market – Find all varieties of local produce in the main open air market. Shop where the locals’ shop.

New Fortress – Just north-west of the open air market you’ll find the New Fortress. Also a Venetian construction, it was built to help protect Corfu against Ottoman invasion. Built in 1577, it’s only a few years younger than the current old fortress. As it borders the north west corner of the old town, you’ll find views across the terracotta rooftops, all the way to the sea, if you climb to the top of the fortress.

The Bazaar of Corfu Old Town – Though you won’t have trouble finding souvenirs around Corfu Town, the Bazaar area has a little more focus on artisan products, rather than just fridge magnets and tourist trinkets. Worth a look if you are in the market to buy higher quality gifts. The Bazaar sprawls across a few streets close to Saint Spyridon Church.

Car Hire Corfu (Rent A Car) & Getting To Corfu

Arriving At Corfu By Air or Ferry

The vast majority of tourists will arrive at Corfu by Air. We flew with Aegean Air – Greece’s national airline. They fly daily from Athens with connects to cities all over the World. Athens is a major hub city and a great jumping off point to explore the rest of Greece. The airport is only a 10 minute drive from Corfu old town.

If you want to shop around for flight options, Search for flight comparison on Expedia.

If you are coming from or going to Northern Greece (Igoumenitsa), Peloponnese (Patras) or Albania (Sarandë), Car Ferries run direct from Corfu town, as well as to other locations. Search Google for more info in advance. Routes and times may be seasonal.

Hertz @ Corfu Airport

Car Hire Corfu: Rent A Car To See The Island Properly. – Driving through the olive groves of West Corfu

Corfu is a large island of 585.3 km² (226 Miles²) and although Corfu Town is one of it’s biggest attractions if you are staying more than one day, exploring the mountains, beaches and foodie activities around the island is part of the reason to visit. In which case, getting Car Hire Corfu is your most convenient option.

We rented with Hertz collecting from their airport office. The process was very simple. I don’t think they are the cheapest but I’ve always found them easier to deal with when renting in the UK too. We were very happy with the service.

If you’d like to shop around, I like Auto Europe for it’s easy to use website.

We stayed at Corfu Holiday Palace, which is a 10 minutes drive south of Corfu town. Their large site features some great restaurants (as mentioned above) and we were very impressed with the service. Our 1 bedroom suite with patio, garden, loungers, and sea view had everything you need for a comfortable stay and was clean and good value for money for a 5 star hotel. The Hotel would benefit from some modernization, but that is reflected in the reasonable price.
