The smell of desire lingers in the air.

But, it’s not sweat and pheromones. It’s the scent of meat grilling. Of cheese frying.

As the kitchen door swings open, blood pumps faster through your veins. Could the waiter be bringing your food?

As the many courses arrive in sequence, your tastebuds tingle with possibility. Pure food lust takes over as Greek Food Porn teases both your eyes and your imagination.

As one Greek lady told us, “If they could, the Greeks would eat forever!” It’ll be easy to see why as you scroll down the page…

So, one shot of Tsipouro down the hatch and it’s time to consume!

Start with Starters

I want to take you on a journey. One of Greek culinary sexploitation.

Eating out in Greece is very affordable by european standards. It’s relatively easy to get a meal and wine in a decent local restaurant for under 10 euros ($12). Just avoid the tourist traps and you’ll be getting amazing, authentic cuisine that won’t make the ATMs have to cry money from your mastercard.

The system of just ordering one dish as a “meal” is not the Greek way. Expect to order a selection of mezzes. It’s always best to bring friends so you can share lots of delicacies.

And, where to start?

For me, nothing gets my food pulse racing like cheese. Take it to the next level by making it fried cheese and I’ll be begging for more…

Saganaki (Fried Cheese)

Saganaki Fried: Greek Food Porn

A massive slab of salty, perfect yellow cheese. Floured and shallow fried in a pan. The word “saganaki” actually refers to the method of cooking – not to the type of cheese. Two of the most common cheeses used are Graveria or Kefalotyri, though others are possible too.

You may have had grilled haloumi cheese before… Saganaki, while similar, takes it to the next level of food porn indulgence. You’ll never forget that salty hit in your mouth. And, this one, you’ll definitely want to swallow.

Make sure you ask for the yellow cheese version – It’s the best!

Dolmades

Dolmades is a generic name for stuffed vine leaves. The style of these varies not just around Europe and Asia, but around Greece too. The style we had most commonly during our time in Greece were vegetarian, stuffed with rice and had a hint of mint and/or lemon.

As each restaurant favours a different filling, it’s worth asking before you order.

Greek Salad

Sexy Salad? Only in Greece.

It may not have the glamour of fried cheese but the traditional Greek salad always satisfies – and it lets you feel that your extreme food indulgence is somewhat more justified.

Tomatoes, cucumber, onion, peppers, olives and feta cheese. It’s a simple vegan greek salad, and when prepared just right, which it seems to be everywhere in Greece, it’s a winner!

Spanakopita

Spanakopita is a spinach and feta cheese pie. Brother to the equally delicious “Triopita” or Feta cheese pie, this is a great option as a starter, second course or even a street snack.

Mains

The main course may just come prematurely with the starters. It may come later. Either way, it will come eventually.

When it does arrive, no matter how full you already are, you’ll make room for it.

A typical main course may involve skewered meats on pita bread – to soak up all those juices. Meatballs and potatoes. Or any combo of meat and carbs.

Here are two of my favourites.

Gyros

Pork Gyros Thessaloniki: Greek Food Porn

Probably one of the most famous foods in Greece. The main surprise for me was that pork seems to be the meat of choice, not lamb. Chicken is always popular too of course. The Gyros is a filled pita or flatbread. It contains slices of meat cut from the ever present meat cylinders that look like mini elephant legs – constantly revolving in the windows of thousands of kebab shops across Greece. It also contains salad, chips and a sauce.

The best thing about this meal is you can have it at most sit-down restaurants – it’s not just a take away thing.

It normally only costs 2 – 4 Euros. And, of course, you can also have it as a meal in itself, rather than as a second course – it’s filling and very budget friendly.

Mousakka

Another world famous Greek food, Moussaka in Greece just seems to taste better – especially this award winning one from Maria’s Kitchen in Nafpaktos. Just look at all that cheese on the top!

Layers of minced meat, eggplant, potato and bechamel sauce – topped with cheese – combine to make this “Greek Lasagne” a top choice.

Dessert

I didn’t know that Greece was big on desserts… They are!

When you are so satisfied that you have reached food climax, there will still be more. Much more.

Although there are many amazing desserts to choose from, there was one that was simply blew my mind.

Emek Kataifi

This mouth orgy of a dessert is constructed from shredded phylo pastry soaked in honey and then topped with cream. Decadent – yes!

One thing is always for sure in Greece, you will not leave hungry.

And for the Food Fetishists…

Every country we visit I like to try one of the more risque delicacies.  The strange, the curious. They have an appeal to every culinary adventurer. Fortunately, for the brave, Greece has this…

 Kokoretsi

Kokoretci (Kokoreç): Greek Food PornKokoretci (Kokoreç): Greek Food Porn

Kokoretsi is a type of skewered kebab. Not one you’d normally find back home.

The offal of a lamb (Lungs, Kidney, Liver, heart etc.) is mixed up together and wrapped in the intestines. Then it is grilled just like a regular kebab. The intestine crisps up wonderfully and helps hold in the juices of the innards.

To many, this will be a step too far on the consumption scale. To me? I loved it!
