Christ the Redeemer: Truly a wonder worth seeing. Brazil.

On a whirl wind one day visit to Rio there was one thing I HAD to do, visit Christo Redentor – or Christ the Redeemer. (As a girl who grew up watching Baz Lurman’s Romeo and Juliet this was a must see)

In this short Blog I take a look at prices and some thoughts relating to Brazil’s great wonder of the world.

At the bottom of the hill are all of the typical souvenir stores selling a multitude of Jesus stuff along side Man United and Brazil footy jerseys, of course! this country is football mad!!!  At the base is a small museum, of sorts, explaining the decision to build a big Jesus and how it came to be on top of a big hill…..pretty much Brazil wanted to stand out to the world so they decided to build something big… but what??? After a vote they decided that the thing that defines Brazil as a nation is its religion and so in 1922 construction began.

The design was by a French sculptor and much of the statue was made in large concrete pieces so it could be taken up the hill.

In order to get to the top to view this amazing statue you must take a trolly car up the hill (The trip takes 20 minutes and costs R$ 30.00 for adults (round trip) which is $14 AUD) most of the way you only get glimpses of the statue which builds the excitement of the moment you get to fully lay eyes on it. Once at the top you are at the back of Mr Redeemer and must walk around to get the front view, but this view of the entire city is quiet awe-inspiring by itself! Then you get to turn around and see the full beauty that is Christ the Redeemer.

This statue certainly earns it place in the World Wonders list!
Just the size of one of the hands makes you question how they even got it up the hill in 1922!

After some typical touristy pictures that are a must (similar to holding up the tower of pisa) we were feeling a bit parched on a warm Brazilian day and wonder upon wonders at the cafe at the base of the statue they sold…….BEER! Not a bad afternoon sipping a beer hanging out with Jeebus (as Homer Simpson would say).

This was so high on my must-see-things-in-the-whole-world list, I don’t think I can explain exactly why, but when I say just go there…….do it, its worth it!
